Who would not have heard of the famous Ghibli Studio? The Ghibli films are one of the most popular films in Japan among young, and elder people as well. Personally, I am also a fan of the Ghibli Studio. Recently I visited one of the Ghibli scenes which were used in the “Whisper of the Heart 耳をすませば” movie. It is a really famous scene, and the place itself is just as beautiful as in the movie.
Seiseki Sakuragaoka (聖蹟桜ヶ丘) is an area which became famous thanks to one of Ghibli's films. Seiseki Sakuragaoka (聖蹟桜ヶ丘) is located in Tama (多摩市 Tama-shi) which is a city located in the western portion of Tokyo Metropolis.
To get there from Shinjuku use the Keio line, it is about 30 minutes train ride.
After I arrived at the Seiseki-Sakuragaoka Station (聖蹟桜ヶ丘駅) I was surprised by the atmosphere of the town. The town has a very nostalgic, old-fashioned style with the beautiful landscape of mountains, and forests. Even I knew I am still here in Tokyo, just 30 minutes away from midtown, it felt just like I traveled far away from the city.
I recommend to carefully look around the station area, there is a lot of interesting shops, and restaurants to discover. After I had lunch nearby the station I headed towards to the famous road.
I heard that in the spring this place is even more breathtaking due to the beautiful cherry blossoms, so I recommend to visit in the spring.
As you walk forward there will be a gorgeous river and a bridge which separates the town from the mountain.
As I walked upwards the scenery became more and more breathtaking. After 10 minutes walk, I reached the famous spot for the city landscape which was visible in the “Whisper of the Heart” as well. After I reached the spot and took some photos I headed upwards the stairs and discovered an old, small temple right next to the road. This 15-20 minutes walk was not strenuous at all, and it is definitely worse it for the view, and the great experience. You can get there very quickly, and once you reached the top there is a lot more to see.
On the top of the mountain, there are several kinds of musical classes, houses, and shops.
It is really adorable and reminded me of the story of the Whisper of the Heart”(耳をすませば). Miyazaki Hayao (宮崎 駿) presented the beauty of the town very well. Since it is a very quiet place, I barely saw anyone there, and not really a tourist spot I recommend to visit even on the weekends. Don’t forget to bring a camera to capture the beautiful landscapes, and the fun experience especially if you are a Ghibli fan.
